down to the wire —直到最后一刻；直到最后關(guān)頭

這一習(xí)慣用語來自號稱“皇家運(yùn)動”的賽馬: down to the wire。這里的wire指賽馬跑道終點(diǎn)拉的終點(diǎn)線。它在幾乎不相上下的競賽中有助于判斷究竟誰先誰后。我們觀看賽馬時有時會見到領(lǐng)先的幾匹馬幾乎不分前后，要直到?jīng)_過終點(diǎn)線的一剎那才定勝負(fù)。這就是這個習(xí)慣用語的出典。
注意：Down to the wire如今常用在政界，尤其是競選運(yùn)動中。
