cold：冷的 溫度低的

turkey：火雞；大家都知道是在感恩節來吃。感恩節什么時候呢。the last Thursday of every November. 每年11月的最后一個星期四。

Cold turkey：字面來看是冷的火雞，那到底是什么意思呢？

In English:To quit something abruptly. 就是馬上放棄做某件事情。

"Cold turkey" is a term describing the actions of a person who gives up his habit or addiction at a single moment, rather than through gradually easing the process through tapering off or supplemental medication. cold turkey指的是一個人馬上放棄自己的不良習慣，比如抽煙，喝酒，賭博，吸毒等，而不是通過一個循序漸進的過程來實現。

這個slang的來源是這樣子：In the state of drug withdrawal the addict's blood is directed to the internal organs, leaving the skin white and with goose bumps. 在戒毒時，吸毒者的血液回流到體內，這會使得皮膚變白并且出現雞皮疙瘩。

這個狀態和冷的火雞的顏色和特征一樣，于是就用cold turkey來指代突然停止某種習慣。一般這個slang和go連用，說成：go cold turkey

舉例：

1，比如說Lucy想減肥，但總是不成功，為什么呢？因為她是個吃貨，每天都吃很多的巧克力。我們就可以說：

You'll never loose weight until you give up chocolate. And I suggest you go cold turkey.

如果你再吃巧克力，永遠都不可能減肥。我建議你不要再吃了。

2. 王小二總是吸煙成癮，這不剛吃完飯又開始抽煙，老婆很生氣。王小二可是一個氣管炎，于是趕緊說：

I go cold turkey now and will never smoke again.

我馬上戒煙，以后再也不抽了。
