第一部分對話：支配時間

你還記得我們的老朋友Norm和Dons嗎？Norm現在已經退休了。不過退休以后，無事可做，閑得難受。在這一講里，你可以聽到他們討論怎樣支配他的時間。

NORM: Why don't we go to the pictures, Doris?
DORIS：Not today, Norm．
NORM: Well, let's go down to the club.
DORIS: Not today, Norm. I'm too busy.
NORM: What about me? I've got nothing to do.
DORIS: Why don't you go fishing?
NORM: I'm sick of fishing Anyway, the tide's not right.

后來他們又討論下星期六晚上做什么。

NORM: Where'll we go on Saturday night?
DORIS: We could go to the pictures.
NORM: I'm sick of the pictures
DORIS: Well, couldn't we just stay home and watch TV?
NORM: I'm home all the time now.
DORIS: I don't know what I'm going to do with you, Norm... you've been so restless since we got back from China.

SUGGESTIONS木成熟的想法
1．MAKING SUGGESTIONS怎樣提出不成熟的想法
提出不大成熟的想法，可以用下面這幾個短語：
a) Why don't we?
Why don't we go to the pictures?
b) Let's
Let's go to the club.
c) How about?
How about going shopping?
d) What about?
What about going fishing?
e) Why don't you...？
Why don't you take up painting?
此外，還可以用.could和-couldn't例如:
We could go to the pictures.
Couldn’t we stay home and watch TV?
You could. take lessons, couldn't you?
如果你覺得對方可能沒有想到或沒有做過某件事，便可以這樣說：
i) Have you (ever) thought of/about...?
Have you ever thought of goING to China?
Eave you thought about joinING the Senior Citizens' Club?
ii)(Have you) ever tried...?
Ever tried paintING?
2. REPLIES TO SUGGESTIONS懲樣回答別人提出的不成熟的想法
一種辦法是重復對方的說法，或用一個類似的說法來回答，例如： ．
Why don't we phone the dentist?
All right, why don't we?
O.K. Let's.
Let's go to the pictures.
Yes，let's．
Yes，why don't we?
此外，還可以用下面這些常用的說法來回答：
a) FRED：What about learning another language?
NORM：Don't make me laugh!
如果覺得對方的話滑稽可笑，還可以這樣回答：
You've got to be joking!
You must be joking!
b) NORM: Have you ever thought of going to China?
FRED：(I) can't say that, have (thought of it)．
這樣回答，表明自己沒有想到過對方提出的想法。
