Early one morning, residents in a very poor neighborhood heard a loud crash. An armored truck had smashed into a guard rail and overturned on a bridge. The truck was carrying millions of dollars. The doors of the truck burst open, and bags of money fell out. The bags broke open, and money flew all over the place. Hundreds of people rushed to get their hands on the cash. "Money is raining from the sky!" they shouted. Altogether, the people stuffed $500,000 into their pockets and bags.
When the excitement died down, the police went from house to house and announced, "If you took money, you must give it back within 48 hours." They waited at the police station, but in the end only two people showed up—a woman and a boy. The woman turned in $19.53, and the boy, Herbert Tarvin, 11, turned in the 85 cents he picked up.
Herbert's honesty made an impression on people. When officials at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, found out about Herbert, they invited him and his entire class to take a trip there. When they arrived, the Disney company rolled out the red carpet for the 16 children. Herbert and his friends had the time of their lives. "We like to reward kids for good behavior," a Disney spokesperson commented.
Money is raining from the sky!",一邊沖過去get their hands on the cash. Get one's hands on something意為“得到,占有”,在本文中可以理解為take ahold of something, 抓住那些錢。 Get your hands on some good books about security and read them. Keep this information confidential , other companies would kill to get hands on this.
Die down意思是“平息;逐漸變?nèi)酢薄1热纾篒 think all the hype will die down pretty soon. It took a long time for the excitement to die down.
前些天我們學(xué)習(xí)了show off短語,表示“炫耀”,今天又學(xué)習(xí)了和show的另一個(gè)搭配。Show up意思相當(dāng)于appear,表示“露面;現(xiàn)身”。 Uncle George didn't show up for our wedding because he forgot. 我們的婚禮,喬治叔叔沒有來,因?yàn)樗恕is show off only serves to show up his ignorance.
盡管連一美元都不到,但是Herbet的誠(chéng)實(shí)made an impression on people. make an impression on sb. How to make a good impression on interviewer.
當(dāng)孩子們到達(dá)的時(shí)候,迪斯尼公司rolled out the red carpet, rolled out the red carpet字面意思是鋪上紅地毯,用來比喻“熱烈歡迎;隆重歡迎”的意思。 Actually, not all stores in America roll out the red carpet for their customers.
Herbet和他的朋友們had the time of their lives。Had the time of one’s life意思相當(dāng)于have a wonderful time。
