【本期俚語:Out of Pocket】
Out of Pocket不只是“掏腰包”
美國話里有一句話：“There's more than just meets the eye”，意思是除了表層意義以外，還有更深一層意思。這句話用在out of pocket上，可以說是恰如其分。
out of pocket，一看這個說法，人們很容易想到，這是掏腰包的意思。對，這是表面意思，比如說，“The out-of-pocket expense for this tripis$500,and the rest is covered by the company.”(這次旅行，個人只需掏500美元，其他的都由公司包了)。注意這里“out-of-pocket”用了連字符“-”，表示一個整體概念：“掏腰包”。
但在美語中，常聽到這樣的說法：“I'm out of pocket these days.”在這句話里，說“out of pocket”是“掏腰包”就講不通了。這句話的真正意思是“I’m unavailable these days”或“I’m absent these days”———“這一段我不在”。
據說，這個說法源于另一個說法“They are living in one another's pocket”（“他們終日廝混在一起”）。既然“pocket”能形象地描繪了“像擠在一個口袋里一樣”的親密，那么“out of pocket”便也可以說是“不在”或“失蹤”了。
