On this International Day of Peace, the words of former Chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights Eleanor Roosevelt remind us that peace must be nurtured day after day because it can never be taken for granted.
值此國際和平日，聯合國人權委員會前主席埃莉諾·羅斯福的話提醒我們，和平需要我們日復一日的努力，它永遠是一項未竟的事業。
The war in Ukraine, like all the other conflicts in the world, is a terrible and tragic illustration of this fact. And in the midst of conflict, UNESCO is committed to safeguarding education, culture, science and information, for they are the seeds of lasting peace.
烏克蘭戰爭和世界上所有其他沖突，均以可怕和慘痛的方式證明了這一點。但即使面對沖突局勢，也要保護教育、文化、科學和信息這些實現持久和平的根基。
This is precisely what we are doing in Ukraine by documenting the destruction wrought and by protecting Ukrainian heritage. It is what we are doing by helping to ensure that education continues there. And it is what we are doing by supporting teachers, artists and journalists so that they are able to do their job, even in times of war.

Our mission to build peace, throughout the world, has never been more pressing and it has never been more difficult. For democracy is under threat. Climate change is multiplying the causes of social, economic and political tension. New technologies are exacerbating inequality and discrimination. We must therefore act globally, using public action to its maximum advantage. This is what this year's theme reminds us.

We are compelled to take such global and systemic action by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the achievement of which is an everyday undertaking for both the United Nations and UNESCO. The SDGs all contribute to the building of truly lasting peace. For example, SDG 4 is the ensuring of universal education for all: education which fosters understanding between peoples, international cooperation, the promotion of human rights and protection of the planet.
聯合國和教科文組織每天為之努力的可持續發展目標所要求我們的，正是采取全面、系統的行動。每一項可持續發展目標都有助于建設真正持久的和平，例如可持續發展目標 4，其宗旨在于實現全民教育，這種教育有利于人民之間的相互理解、國際合作、促進人權和保護環境。
This is why UNESCO promotes its masterclasses against racism, which are aimed at young people. This is why we promote media and information literacy (MIL), which combats hate speech by helping people to develop critical thinking. And to help us carry out all these activities, we rely on the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet), which unites 12,000 institutions in 182 countries around a common cause: that of building the defences of peace in the minds of children and young people.

Finally, UNESCO works to ensure that the power of science – particularly that of the ties forged by scientific cooperation – is wielded in the service of peace. This is the objective of the International Centre for Synchrotron Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), which brings together, in Jordan, scientists from throughout the Middle East, building bridges between different areas of knowledge and between different countries.

On this International Day of Peace, UNESCO therefore calls on all of society's players to commit to upholding and working for peace – for we need peace to be, always, the common lodestar of the world we share.
