Failed confrontation
Barry had never been the person they chose forconfrontationof the enemies ofconservation, but when he had twoconsecutivesuccessful meetings withconfidentbusinessmen it was theconsensusof his organization that heconfrontthe large oil company president scheduled to come to town the next week.
Theconfigurationfor his plan was to first ask to have aconfidentialmeeting with the man in aconfinedlocation. If this did not work he would ask the man toconsentto meeting in a public forum where he would feel safe from aggressive questioning. If the man would notconform, Barry would accept theconsequencesand address the man there when he met him. There was certain to beconflictwith this option, but Barry would talk to the man in asconscientiousof a fashion as possible. He simply needed to be confronted.
When the time came for Barry to approach the president of the oil company, however, several of the businessman’s bodyguardsconnectedthe signals and saw that Barry might be a problem. Theyconfirmedwith each other in their headphones and moved the businessman to acongruentlocation. Barry never had a chance.
Afterwards Barry knew that nocongratulationswould be given to him inconjunctionwith this failed event. As he fell out ofconsciousnessand into sleep that evening in his bed, however, Barry was relieved that nothing bad had happened. He had been brave andconsequentto the conservation movement. And there would always be a next time.
對抗失敗
大家從來都沒想過要選巴里出來與那些資源保護的敵人對抗。可是，在他連續兩次成功會晤自信的商人之后，大家就達成了一個共識，讓他去面對計劃下周要來的大型石油公司總裁。
巴里的計劃是這樣一個布局：首先要求在一個限定地點與總裁進行秘密會談。如果這樣不行，他會要求對方同意到一個公共場所見面，在那兒他就不會受到攻擊性盤問。如果總裁還是不遵照這個意思，巴里也會接受這樣的結果，就在見面的地方跟他說話。這種選擇肯定會引起沖突，但是巴里會盡可能用一種真誠的方式和他交談。他就是需要有人跟他對抗。
可是等到巴里要去接近石油公司總裁的時候，這位商人的幾位保鏢聯系了種種信號，看出巴里可能會制造麻煩。他們通過耳機互相確認之后，把總裁帶到了一個合適的地點。巴里一直沒有與他見面的機會。
后來，巴里了解到，受這次失敗的牽連，給他的祝賀也泡湯了。不過，那晚躺在床上失去知覺、昏昏欲睡的時候，巴里如釋重負，因為畢竟沒有不好的事情發生。他一直很勇敢而且與資源保護運動邏輯上是一致的，總是會有下一次機會的。
