Two years ago, at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts tea party in Los Angeles, Millie Bobby Brown was a charming darling. Whenever she met someone, she would extend her hand and say, "Hi! I'm Millie Bobby Brown. So glad to meet you!"
Best known for starring as Eleven, a young girl with psychokinetic abilities, in the hit sci-fi TV series Stranger Things, Brown is “an icon for her generation”, as W magazine put it.

To play Eleven, Brown had to cut off her long hair and shave her head, which is something that would be quite difficult for any teenager. But the British actress did it without a second thought. This is perhaps what sets her apart from fellow child stars. "On the one hand, it was cool. When you're bald, rain feels like a head massage. I'd walk in the rain, and people would look at me like I was crazy," she told W. "But on the other hand, people stared at me, wondering whether I was sick. Some would even laugh at me, without knowing whether I was or wasn't sick."
These people certainly hurt Brown's feelings, but they also taught her something about compassion. "In the end, being bald was the best thing I ever did – being different changed my life. I wanted to embrace my baldness and, hopefully, inspire people," she said.
Her bravery won her the honor of the youngest UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador last month.
"It's a huge honor to become UNICEF's newest and youngest ever Goodwill Ambassador," the 14-year-old, who has supported the children's charity since 2016, wrote on social media platform Instagram. "I am looking forward to meeting as many children and young people as I can, hearing their stories, and speaking out on their behalf."
"Children are their own best advocates," Henrietta Fore, UNICEF's executive director said in an announcement. "I know that Millie will use her passion to defend the rights of vulnerable children and young people everywhere."
