A boat carrying some 400 passengers has sunk off the coast of east Java in Indonesia.
Reports say over 70 people having been rescued and hundreds of others are still missing.
AL to take peace proposal on Syria to UN security council

The Arab League (AL) plans to take the Arab peace proposal on Syria to the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday.
The AL's latest decision comes after Russia proposed a new draft resolution on Syria at the UN Security Council last Thursday. Western countries have expressed willingness to consider and negotiate the proposal.
The AL urges Syria to accept within the next four days the Arab proposal which called for Syrian regime to end violence and to allow in Arab observers.
Storm Washin approaches the south China sea

This year's 21st tropical storm Washin will approach the South China Sea and bring strong winds to the area from Saturday night to Sunday.
The National Meteorological Center says the storm will sweep northwest from the Sulu Sea off southwest the Philippines at a speed of 20-25 km per hour to enter the southeastern part of the South China Sea.
At least 172 people have died and hundreds remain missing when Washin brought heavy downpour that caused massive flooding in the Philippines.
Chinese police nab 12,000 fugitive homicide suspects in crackdown

A police campaign that began in May has seen the arrest of 12,000 fugitive homicide suspects so far.
The Ministry of Public Security says in a statement that during the high-profile crackdown, 23,000 fugitives whose whereabouts had remained unknown to police for at least 10 years, were arrested.
Police also apprehended 190 criminals on China's "most wanted" list.
The ministry attributed part of its success to tip-offs from the public.
The statement says more than 30,000 clues received from citizens had helped the police to track down 19,000 of the fugitives arrested.
Coal mine flooding traps 3 in southwest China

Three workers remain trapped after a coal mine flood early Saturday in southwest China's Yunnan province.
A local official says the accident occurred at a shaft of the Feilongma Coal Mine in the county of Mile in Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture.
Twelve miners were working in the shaft and nine managed to escape.
Rescuers are rushing to pump water out to save the trapped men, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
23 injured in plant blast in Shanghai, no deaths reported

Twenty-three workers were injured in an explosion at a factory in Shanghai Saturday afternoon, according to the press office of the Shanghai municipal government.
A total of 61 workers were sent to hospital for medical check. Twenty-three of them were hospitalized for burns. None of the injuries were life-threatening. No deaths have been reported.
The local government is investigating the cause of the accident.
China to spend 46.3 billion yuan upgrading detention houses

China plans to spend over 46 billion yuan (over 7 billion U.S. dollars) upgrading police-run detention houses in the coming five years.
An official with the Ministry of Public Security says the money will be used to improve conditions of dentention houses, protect basic human rights of detainees, basically solve the problem overcrowdiness of detention houses and build more rooms for lawyers to meet detainees.
He says the regulations on detention houses are being revised to better protect the legitimate rights of detainees.
Beijing reaches annual "blue sky days" target

As of Sunday, Beijing has enjoyed 274 days of "blue sky" in 2011, fulfilling its annual target ahead of schedule.
An official with Beijing's Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau says Beijing has seen an overall decline in the concentration of various pollutants in 2011.
He says the overall air quality of Beijing was better than last year, with 22 more days of grade I air quality than were recorded in 2010.
However, Beijing also experienced several days of poor air quality as a result of bad weather conditions.
The bureau has been keeping a close watch on construction sites and coal-fired boilers in order to reduce emissions of pollutants since the city began supplying heat in mid-November.
Botswana Embassy Donates to the Needy Children in China

The Botswana embassy in China has donated a Christmas hamper to the orphans in a suburban Beijing primary school.
During a visit to the Guang Ai Primary School in northeast Beijing, Botswana's ambassador to China Mr. Sasara George says the donation conveys Botswana people's love and affection to the less fortunate members of the community. He encouraged the children to study hard and develop their talents.
Ambassador George says the donation is part of Botswana's fulfillment of the nation's vision of 2016 of "being a Compassionate, Just and Caring Nation".
Guang Ai primary school, founded in 2007, has more than100 students aged six and up who do not have parents or homes.
