Chinese President Hu Jintao visits N. Korea embassy in Beijing

Chinese President Hu Jintao has paid a visit to the North Korean embassy in Beijing to express his condolences following the death of Kim Jong Il.
At the same time, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has held phone conversations with his U.S. and South Korean counterparts to talk about the death of North Korean's top leader.
Yang says that safeguarding 'peace and stability' on the Korean Peninsula serves the 'common interests' of all parties.

"Foreign minister Yang Jiechi said that maintaining peace and stability on the Korean peninsula is in the interests of all sides. China is willing to work hard with all sides to this effect"
Meanwhile, in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, people continue to mourn, laying flowers at the base of a bronze statue of Kim Jong Il's late father, Kim Il Sung.
The South Korean government has also offered its condolences to North Korea, saying the South hopes the North will restore stability soon.
Chinese vice president arrives in Vietnam for visit

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has arrived in Hanoi to start his official visit to Vietnam.
Upon arrival, Xi Jinping has issued a statement talking about deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Vietnam.
Xi Jinping says he hopes the visit will help beef up strategic mutual trust and advance pragmatic cooperation.
Xi Jinping will also visit Thailand after his time in Vietnam.
China urges Japan to protect legitimate rights of Chinese fishermen

The Chinese government has issued a statement, calling on the Japanese side to protect the rights of Chinese fishermen detained this week.
Japan's coast guard detained a Chinese fishing boat on Tuesday for allegedly operating illegally in Japanese territorial waters.
The captain of the boat has been taken to the coast guard's office in Nagasaki, while the other 10 crew members on board are now staying in the vessel.
An investigation is now said to be underway.

The World Heath Organization is now sending mosquito nets to evacuation centers to try and prevent the outbreak of Malaria. in the region.
Philippine President Benigno Aquino has declared a national disaster, warning that the humanitarian situation in Mindanao is deteriorating.

Egyptian women are venting their anger over the violence against female protesters.
Hundreds of women have marched into Cairo's Tahrir square, currently the focus of attentionas the capital enters it's fifth day of protests against Egypt's military rulers.
The latest anger comes following video footage has circulated worldwide of a female protester being stripped and beaten by soldiers in Tahrir Square .
The death toll in the latest clashes stands at 15.
The military is contending the attack of the female protester is an isolated incident that under investigation.
The renewed clashes, which started on Friday, coincide with the second stage of voting in Egypt's parliamentary elections.
First group of AL monitors heading to Syria on Thursday

The Arab League now says the first group of international monitors will be heading to Syria as early as Thursday.
The trip has been made possible after Syria agreed to sign an Arab League deal aimed at trying to put an end to the violence in the country.
The advance team, which is a prelude to the monitoring mission itself, will include legal and security experts from Arab states and non-governmental organizations.
Yemeni protesters marching to Sanaa demanding Saleh's trial

Hundreds of protesters have now begun a 4-day march in Yemen to the country's capital, demanding the prosecution of outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The protesters are set to walk almost 200 km to Sana'a, carrying banners rejecting the Gulf-brokered deal that has granted Saleh immunity.
Saleh still holds an interim role of 'Honorary President' amid the transition period.
New Presidental elections will be held in Yemen on February 21st.
Small plane crashes onto New Jersey highway, five confirmed dead

A small plane has crashed on a major New York-area highway, killing all five people aboard.
No one on the ground was injured.
The New York investment banking firm Greenhill & Co. has confirmed that two of its managing directors, Jeffrey Buckalew and Rakesh Chawla, as well as Buckalew's wife and two children, were on the plane.
The plane was heading for the state of Georgia when it crashed.
China strengthens crackdown on train ticket scalpers ahead of spring travel rush

A crackdown on ticket scalping is now underway here in China ahead of the 40 day Spring Festival rush which begins next month on January 8th.
The Ministry of Railways expects to see a record 235 million passengers making trips across the country during the Spring Festival.
In efforts to try and combat ticket scalping, an online ticket-booking system and a real-name ticket purchasing system will be in place.
Police have already arrested over 800 scalpers this month alone.
