In today's Buzzword Mix, our Buzzword is Flashpacking.

I'm sure you've heard of the word backpacking before. So it's not difficult to guess that this is a new word relating to traveling.

今天的buzzword就跟backpacking一樣, 跟旅游有關.

Were you born to travel? Do you get itchy feet from time to time? Do you crave adventure but with a boutique twist, then chances are flashpacking is for you.

First of all, if we look at backpacking, backpacking在中文里是背包游, backpackers are translated into “背包客”.

But when you hear the word backpacking, it is generally associated with budget traveling, traveling on a shoestring(窮游).

They carry a big backpack, and they sleep in airports, use hostile, and they try to spend as little money as possible.

Well, if you want the adventurous experiences of a backpacker but just don't want to rough it, then flashpacking is for you.

The term flashpacker is a combination of “flash”, flashy and “backpacker”.

We use the word flashy to talk about people who show off their wealth. For example, this is a flashy car; or you're really flashy with money.

就比較炫富, 比較fancy的, 比較奢侈的這種行為, 我們會用flashy, therefore flashpacking.

Let's just translate it into “奢華背包游”, it describes a lifestyle for travelers usually in their 30s and 40s, who are financially secure and who actively seek out authentic adventures and encounters, but also have the budget to experience the best every destination has to offer.

基本就是那種既有背包客的探險精神, 但又不想住的吃的玩的太差. Because they've got the money.

Flashpackers, they travel in style and believe in roughing it in luxury. This is a very interesting description.

Originally “to rough it” means to do things on budget that you do things very very cheaply, but “roughing it in luxury” in itself is kind of a paradox, but really describes flashpackers concept of combining the rough elements of adventure and the luxury side, the comfort side.

Flashpackers would actively seek out unique experiences and defying luxury as something more than thread counts or shower size.

Flashpacking is a total immersion travel experience. It's what happens to adventurous backpackers who no longer find the idea of sharing a hostel bunker bed appealing.

其實你也可以把flashpacking試做backpacking的一個升級版, when backpackers they get more money, they still want the adventure, but they no longer want to share a hostel room with six other people.

It's choosing the bottle of wine instead of having to share a flat keg with strangers, because you can afford it.

But a flashpacker is also not just a mere tourist.

A tourist goes sightseeing with a busload of people in the hope that something will happen to him.

A flashpacker goes looking for a unique adventure and authentic encounters, and is not afraid to try new flavors, dive into new cultures or explore uncharted destinations.

1 Backpacking VS Flashpacking

二者什么區別?

If we look at backpackers and flashpackers, there are a few major differences.

Obviously the first one is budget.

Many people who go backpacking are traveling on some sort of budget. Sometimes this budget can be really small since many backpackers are really, really young, they're probably doing a gap year as university students.

They mostly tried to scrimp and save on anything they can; Whereas flashpackers they tend to be able to afford the luxuries and comfort that come alongside travel.

The second one is accommodation.

Flashpackers will opt for hotels or apartments rather than those budget hostels favored by backpackers.

那flashpacker基本上就不會住像背包客住的那些青旅了, 他們更會選擇比較好的酒店或者酒店式公寓.

And also when it comes to length of trips, backpackers, like I said, they are usually young people doing a gap year.

They might be traveling for a month or even a whole year whilst flashpackers generally have an actual job and they're doing this more like a holiday or a vacation rather than what you would imagine backpacking to be.

And the final difference is the age range.

When it comes to people who go flashpacking, we're looking at an age range of maybe early 30s to late 40s.

This is because flashpackers tend to be more financially secure, but they still are young enough to want to enjoy adventure type holidays rather than just sitting on the beach.

2 How to be a successful flashpacker?

既要冒險,又要舒適

After comparing flashpackers with backpackers and just your generic tourists, we will finish today's episode off with a few tips on how you can be a successful flashpacker if you happen to want the adventure and also the comfort.

Number one, attitude defines altitude

If you consider yourself a flashpacker, chances are that you started out as a budgeting backpacker.

Remember that carefree, positive and humble attitude that you had being a backpacker.

Well, hold on to that state of mind, when things get hectic, always remind yourself that it's about the journey, not the destination.

Even though now you can afford a lot more, it's that attitude that counts.

雖然已經是flashpacker, 但是也要保有 backpacker的這種探險精神.

Number two, don't over plan, overpack and under-time

The best way to ensure you have an unforgettable trip as a flashpacker is to flow with the current of now, and remind yourself that the most memorable moments of our lives happen when we least expect it.

Just go with the flow, seek adventure instead of planning everything down to every detail.

Number three, don't be ashamed to splash out

As a flashpacker, you're typically a little older and you're more financially secure than your average backpackers.

You have bigger budgets or you don't even have budgets at all. So treat yourself and enjoy the luxury that you worked hard for.

Number four, staying connected on your devices is totally okay

Whilst backpackers might rough it the hard way, flashpackers tend to be people who cannot really live without or travel without their laptop, smartphone and all these gadgets,

whether it's to keep tabs on the office or stay in touch with loved ones or just sharing things on social media, do as you like, after all, this is what flashpacking is about.

All in all, you would know if you're a flashpacker because you'll crave the idea of a game changing trip with other solo travelers. You don't want to join any tour groups.

You enjoy the unknown, and like backpackers you also want to connect with other travelers were just like you, open-minded, kind, and sharing your curiosity about the world.

Now let's move on to the sample sentence.
