In today's Buzzword Mix, our buzzword is Tradwife. Trad, which stands for traditional.
The shares and videos with this #tradwife often show a curated look at women embracing domesticity.
與社媒上很多大女主獨立女性的標簽正好相反, 這些tradwife的標簽通常展現(xiàn)的都是一些女性, 特別是年輕女性去embrace domesticity, domestic life, 展現(xiàn)出來這些女性自愿地回歸到家庭, 去擁抱家庭生活;
So a tradwife in recent western culture typically depicts a woman who believes in and practices traditional sex roles and marriages.
To put it in simpler terms, tradwife lifestyle is usually married in a straight relationship.
The man works, the wife does not,
The man is the head of the household and the final word on all things, financial, lifestyle and professional for the family.
Kids are a part of the plan if not already in the family.
So basically being a tradwife, you assume the traditional housewife or stay-at-home mother role and you do all of the household chores like cooking, cleaning, laundry, so on and so forth.
Additionally, special attention is paid to the importance of raising children.
02 Tradwife
Now it has already become a subculture.
A tradwife subculture is based on advocating for patriarchal traditional values.
And in particular, a traditional view of wives as mothers and homemakers.
而這樣的一個tradwife 的亞文化, 倡導的就是 patriarchal traditional values, 父權社會之下傳統(tǒng)的價值觀, 特別是traditional view of wives as mothers and homemakers.
Although some might frame their identity within a submissive or even biblical marriage.
Now, this might be what some people think.
But other tradwives claim that traditional marriage is the key to liberation from being overworked, economic insecurity and the stress of trying to survive in a world, hostile to women's survival and existence.
03 Tradwife 起源
This whole tradwife trend started in the United States. Actually, if you dig deeper, there is a disillusionment taking hold among young Americans.
Studies show Gen Z is increasingly less motivated by the daily grind and adopting a more relaxed approach to their long term financial security.
Gen Z 也就差不多是00后這一代, 他們并不再相信那種搏命的雞血文化, 那種hustle culture, especially young women whether they are married or not, are expressing a desire to take a step out of the professional rat race.
There's a lot of pressure on young women, for some being a stay-at-home girlfriend or trad wife might be an excuse to step back and do less.
However, according to some, there is nothing new about these taglines.
Author Eve Rodsky says of tradwives and the related social media trend of stay-at-home girlfriends, she said, “That is the definition of patriarchy — there’s nothing new here.”
and tradwives are pretending they have agency over their choices, but they're actually taking huge economic risks. They don't have economic security.
As you can imagine, this tradwife lifestyle has been criticized a lot.
Part of the reason is its associations in the US and Britain with the alt-right and white nationalism.
And critics often stipulate that and white nationalism embody what has been described as toxic femininity and internalized sexism.
Now it might be interesting for you to know that the tradwife culture has actually a complicated relationship with feminism.
但是很有意思的是, 女性主義對于tradwife culture并沒有一味的抨擊, 因為這里面有一個點, 雖然有一些女性主義者會認為tradwife lifestyle is a rejection of feminism in favor of a return to simpler times and patriarchal family systems.
However, there are also feminists saying that we should support individual women's right to be a tradwife. They described the ability to choose as a feminist success.
甚至有人說 the last thing we need as women is for some of us to feel superior and judgmental of others.
Putting women down is the patriarchy's job, not feminism.
Now let's move on to the sample sentence.
