什么是愛

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home from the war. He called his parents from San Francisco.

這是一個最終從戰(zhàn)場歸來的士兵的故事。他從舊金山打電話給他的父母：

"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me."

“爸爸媽媽，我回來了，可是我有個請求。我想帶一個朋友和我一起回家。”

"Sure!" they replied, "We'd love to meet him"

“當(dāng)然好啊!”他們回答，“我們會很高興見到他的。”

"There's something you should know, the son continued, he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. "He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."

“有些事情你們應(yīng)該了解到，”兒子又繼續(xù)說道，“他在戰(zhàn)場上受了重傷。由于踩到了地雷，他失去了一只胳膊和一條腿，他現(xiàn)在沒地方可去，我想請他和我們一起生活。”

"I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."

“兒子，聽到那個我很難過，或許我們可以幫他找個安身之處。”

"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."

“不行，爸爸媽媽，我想讓他和我們一起生活。”

"Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."

“兒子，”父親又接著說，“你不知道自己在說些什么。像他這樣的殘疾人會對我們的生活造成很大的負(fù)擔(dān)。我們還要過自己的生活，不能讓這樣的事情干擾我們的生活。我認(rèn)為你應(yīng)該先回家然后忘了他，他會找到自己的一片天空的。”

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him.

就在此時兒子掛斷了電話，他的父母再也沒有他的消息了。

A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son.

然而幾天后，他們接到了舊金山的警察打來的電話，被告知他們兒子已經(jīng)墜樓身亡了。警方相信這是一起自殺案件。于是這對傷心欲絕的父母飛往舊金山，被帶到停尸間去辨認(rèn)兒子的遺體。

They recognized him, but to their horror, they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

他們認(rèn)出了自己的兒子，但令他們感到驚駭?shù)氖牵麄儼l(fā)現(xiàn)了之前不知道的一些事情：他們的兒子居然只有一只胳臂和一條腿。
