"Where do you see the necessity?" he asked suddenly.

"Where? You, sir, have placed it before me."

"In what shape?"

"In the shape of Miss Ingram; a noble and beautiful woman, your bride."

"I tell you I must go!" I retorted, roused to something like passion.

"Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you?
“你難道認為，我會留下來甘愿做一個對你來說無足輕重的人？
Do you think I am an automaton -- a machine without feelings
你以為我是一架機器--一架沒有感情的機器，
and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup?
能夠容忍別人把一口面包皮從我嘴里搶走，把一滴生命之水從我杯子里潑掉？
Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless?
