India Unveils World’s Largest Statue
印度揭露世界上最大的雕塑
Thousands of police officers were sent out to guard the world’s largest statue in advance of its official inauguration in India this week. The statue of Sardar Patel, named the Statue of Unity, stands 182 metres high in a remote part of Gujarat state. Patel, the first deputy prime minister of India, is celebrated for unifying the nation after its independence in 1947. In addition to the heavy police presence, drones and helicopters flew over the region to watch for and deter protesters. The Statue of Unity is controversial because nearly 200 families were forced to leave their land in order to make room for it. India’s new statue took over four years to build and is more than twice the size of America’s Statue of Liberty.
