Immigration Debate Heats Up Following Chloe Kim’s Olympic Gold

After American snowboarder Chloe Kim won gold in the women’s halfpipe event this week, her father Jong Jin Kim, an immigrant from Korea, pointed to himself and said “American Dream.” Chloe Kim’s father moved to California from Korea in 1982 with only $300 in his pocket. He did not have a university degree when he arrived; however, he later attended university and become an engineer. He also started a family and raised a daughter who, at just 17 years old, won an Olympic gold medal for her country. US Senator Dick Durbin picked up on the story and told it on the Senate floor as an example of why Trump’s vision of a strict, merit-based immigration is not the American way.
