At the sight of the young woman, the Savage started, recoiled, turned pale.
野蠻人看見那女郎便吃了一驚，退縮了，蒼白了臉。
The young woman stood, smiling at him–an uncertain, imploring, almost abject smile.
那女郎站在那兒對他微笑著——一種沒有把握的、乞求的、差不多是低三下四的微笑。
The seconds passed. Her lips moved, she was saying something;
時間一秒秒過去。她的嘴唇動了，在說著什么。
but the sound of her voice was covered by the loud reiterated refrain of the sightseers.
但是語聲被反復的高叫壓倒了。
We–want–the whip! We–want–the whip!
我們——要——看——鞭子——功。
The young woman pressed both hands to her left side, and on that peach-bright,
妙齡女郎雙手壓在左邊，那張蜜桃一樣明艷、
doll-beautiful face of hers appeared a strangely incongrous expression of yearning distress.
玩偶一樣美麗的臉上出現了一種渴望而痛苦的不和諧的表情。
Her blue eyes seemed to grow larger, brighter; and suddenly two tears rolled down her cheeks.
她那藍色的眼睛似乎變得更大了，更明亮了。兩顆淚珠突然滾下面頰。
Inaudibly, she spoke again; then, with a quick, impassioned gesture stretched out her arms towards the Savage, stepped forward.
她又說話了，仍然聽不見。然后她突然做出一個急速的沖動的姿勢，伸出了雙臂，向著野蠻人走了過來。
We–want–the whip! We–want …
我們——要——看——鞭子——功……
And all of a sudden they had what they wanted.
他們的要求突然得到了滿足。
"Strumpet!" The Savage had rushed at her like a madman. "Fitchew!"
“婊子！”野蠻人像瘋子一樣向她沖去。“臭貓！”
Like a madman, he was slashing at her with his whip of small cords.
他像個瘋子一樣揮起細繩鞭向她抽去。
Terrified, she had turned to flee, had tripped and fallen in the heather.
她嚇得魂不附體，轉身便跑，絆了一下，摔倒在石南叢上。
"Henry, Henry!" she shouted. But her ruddy-faced companion had bolted out of harm's way behind the helicopter.
“亨利，亨利！”她大叫。但是她那容光煥發的同伴早已經逃離了危險，躲到直升機后面去了。
With a whoop of delighted excitement the line broke; there was a convergent stampede towards that magnetic centre of attraction.
人群又興奮又快活，哇哇大叫。圈子散了，人們往磁力吸引的中。動亂跑。
Pain was a fascinating horror.
痛苦是一種迷人的恐怖。
"Fry, lechery, fry!" Frenzied, the Savage slashed again.
“懲罰，淫亂，懲罰！”野蠻人發了狂，又抽了一鞭。
Hungrily they gathered round, pushing and scrambling like swine about the trough.
人們迫不及待地圍了過來，像豬鑼圍著食槽一樣亂拱亂擠。
"Oh, the flesh!" The Savage ground his teeth.
“啊！肉欲！”野蠻人咬著牙，
This time it was on his shoulders that the whip descended. "Kill it, kill it!"
這一回鞭子落到了自己肩膀上。“殺死肉欲！殺死肉欲！”
Drawn by the fascination of the horror of pain and, from within, impelled by that habit of cooperation,
苦痛的恐怖吸引了人群，出于內心的需要受到合作習慣的驅使和團結補償欲望的支配
that desire for unanimity and atonement, which their conditioning had so ineradicably implanted in them,
那是他們的條件設置埋藏在他們心里，無法抹去的,
they began to mime the frenzy of his gestures, striking at one another as the Savage struck at his own rebellious flesh,
他們也開始模仿起野蠻人的瘋狂動作來，用野蠻人鞭打自己背叛的肉體的瘋狂彼此毆打起來，
or at that plump incarnation of turpitude writhing in the heather at his feet.
或是毆打著他腳邊石南叢中那豐腴的抽搐著的肉體——那墮落的體現。
