Noiseless on his pneumatic shoes, the man came up behind him.

"Good-morning, Mr. Savage," he said. "I am the representative of The Hourly Radio."

Startled as though by the bite of a snake, the Savage sprang to his feet, scattering arrows, feathers, glue-pot and brush in all directions.
野蠻人仿佛叫蛇咬了一口，跳了起來，箭、羽毛、膠水罐和刷子掀了一地。
"I beg your pardon," said the reporter, with genuine compunction. "I had no intention …"
“請原諒，”記者說，真心地感到過不去，“我不是故意的……”
He touched his hat–the aluminum stove-pipe hat in which he carried his wireless receiver and transmitter.
他用手碰了碰帽子邊緣——那是一頂鋁制的煙囪帽，鑲嵌了無線電收發報機。
"Excuse my not taking it off," he said. "It's a bit heavy. Well, as I was saying, I am the representative of The Hourly …"
“請原諒我不能脫帽致敬，”他說，“帽子有點重。噢，我剛才在說，我代表《每時廣播》……”
"What do you want?" asked the Savage, scowling. The reporter returned his most ingratiating smile.
“你要干什么？”野蠻人皺著眉頭問。記者用他最討好的微笑回答。
"Well, of course, our readers would be profoundly interested …"
“當然，我們的讀者會非常感到興趣的，如果……”
He put his head on one side, his smile became almost coquettish. "Just a few words from you, Mr. Savage."
他把腦袋偏到一邊，微笑得幾乎有點獻媚的意思?！爸恍枰阏f幾句話，野蠻人先生。”
And rapidly, with a series of ritual gestures,
他做了幾個禮貌性的手勢，
he uncoiled two wires connected to the portable battery buckled round his waist;

plugged them simultaneously into the sides of his aluminum hat;
分頭插進他那鋁制帽子的兩側。
touched a spring on the crown–and antenn? shot up into the air;
然后碰了碰帽子頂上一根彈簧，嗆，一根天線射了出來；
touched another spring on the peak of the brim–and, like a jack-in-the-box, out jumped a microphone and hung there,
他再碰了碰帽檐上的一根彈簧，一個麥克風就像玩具彈簧人一樣蹦了出來，
quivering, six inches in front of his nose; pulled down a pair of receivers over his ears;
懸在離他鼻子六英寸的地點，搖晃著。他再拉下受話器蓋住耳朵，
pressed a switch on the left side of the hat-and from within came a faint waspy buzzing;
按了一下左邊的按鈕——一種輕微的黃蜂般的嗡嗡聲出現了；
turned a knob on the right–and the buzzing was interrupted by a stethoscopic wheeze and cackle, by hiccoughs and sudden squeaks.
再扭了一下右邊的把手，嗡嗡聲便為一種聽診器里的咝咝聲、咯咯聲、打嗝聲和突然的吱吱聲所代替。
