Today we're gonna finish most the historical overview, we ended at the civil war, So we pick up the story there

and I hope to take it up to the Carter perhaps Reagan era, So a long sweep of history

Before I begin the historical narrative
在我開始講這段歷史之前
I just like to sum up some of the geographical patterns that we see in this long period
我想先總結(jié)一下這段時間里大致的選情地理格局
The basic pattern is pretty simple
基本的格局非常簡單
It's inherited from the civil war period
它延續(xù)了南北時期的格局
We see a far north dominated by the Republican party south dominated by the Democratic party

and the important serials of swings states in the middle

going from Connecticut through New York, New Jersy, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois

and those states would decide the elections in most cases

As the country fills out as the western part

We find that the Pacific coast usually going with the northeast with the Republican party

And we find what we might call the interior west region from the great plains to the Rocky Mountains as a very important swing region

That in some elections would align with the south and the Democrats and important election like 1896, 1916,
