The US Transportation Secretary is optimistic that automakers and tech companies developing self-driving vehicles will voluntarily comply with guidelines issued by the federal government.
Anthony Foxx added that the NHTSA has called on car companies to submit details about their autonomous vehicle systems for a 15-point safety assessment.

Foxx also urged states to defer their vehicle regulations to the policies of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for this emerging technology.
NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind added the voluntary guidelines took years to finalize for an industry sector that is changing so fast, regulations could be outdated before they become official policy.
