Denmark’s parliament voted to allow the confiscation of asylum-seekers’ possessions to pay for their keep. Migrants may retain $1,450 in money and valuables; items of “sentimental value”, such as wedding rings, are exempt. Human-rights groups, the UN’s refugee agency and the European Commission have criticised the proposal. Switzerland introduced a similar measure last year.
