The Namib Desert.
那米比沙漠
There are no trees for hundreds of miles.
放眼望去半棵樹都沒有
Yet these are, undoubtedly, chameleon foot prints.
但地上有一排變色龍的腳印
This female Namaqua chameleon is searching for a mate.
這只母那米比變色龍 正在尋找伴侶
No part of her body seems suited to such an environment.
它的身體怎么看 都不適合這樣的環境
Her feet, that could give her such a good grip on twigs,
它能緊緊攀住樹枝的腳掌
should surely be useless on soft sand.
在柔軟的沙上應該毫無用處
But she's able to spread them like snow shoes.
但它可以像雪鞋般的撐開腳趾
She needs to get warm and active while the desert is still cool...
這只變色龍要讓身體熱起來 但是沙漠的溫度還很低
so she exploits the chameleon's versatile skin.
這時候皮膚變色的絕活 就派上用場了
The side facing the sun goes dark to absorb the sun's heat,
向陽側的皮膚變成深色 以吸收太陽的熱氣
while the other remains light...
另一側變成淺色
and minimises the heat escaping from her body.
將散熱程度降到最低
She's hungry and food is scarce.
它餓了 這里的食物很少
But she's still not quick enough to grab these desert beetles.
但是想抓這些沙漠甲蟲 它的動作還是慢了一步
