Roger Federer has won his seventh Wimbledon title, defeating Britain's Andy Murray to equal Pete Sampras's all time record. The win means the Swiss has now won seventeen grand slams.
It denied home favourite Murray the chance to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a major trophy. The 30-year-old Federer ultimately triumphed in four sets on Centre Court to reclaim the world number one ranking. Murray has now lost all four of his Grand Slam finals...three of them against Federer. He was the first Briton to contest the Wimbledon men’s singles final since Bunny Austin in 1938, but fell just short of the ultimate goal.
