Ukraine’s national hero Andriy Shev-chenko led his team to a 2-1 comeback victory over Sweden by scoring two goals in 6 minutes in their opening Group D game. Ukraine, who is co-hosting Euro 2012 is starting the tournament in spectacular style.
35-year-old Shev-chenko launched himself at a clipped Andriy Yar-molenko cross, to head the equaliser in the 55th minute.
Ukraine, the group outsiders, started the match running, in front of a frenzied home crowd but Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahim-ovic threatened to spoil their big night when he turned in a low Kim Kallstrom cross to put the Swedes ahead after 52 minutes.
After Johan Elmander missed a glorious chance to level in the last minute, Ukraine now sits proudly top of Group D with three points. France and England drew 1-1 earlier on Monday.
