Real Madrid have one hand on a first La Liga trophy in four years after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant winner in a 2-1 victory at Barcelona on Saturday. The win stretched Real’s lead over their bitter rivals to seven points with four games left.
As the two teams walked out for a match watched by hundreds of millions around the world, close to 100,000 home fans transformed Nou Camp into a giant mosaic in the blue and red colours of Barca and the yellow and red of Catalonia. Real had scored a stunning 107 goals in a league season, but Jose Mourinho’s side had sought in vain in eight previous trips to Barca.
Madrid played active on Saturday. In the 5th minute, Ronaldo’s header tested the hosts’ defence. Victor Valdes was on high alert.
Barca struck back in the 6th minute, Dani Alves stole the ball in the upfield and got a chance to face Iker Casillas one-on-one. But the Real captain was speedily off his line to smother the ball at the Brazilian’s feet. Superb goalkeeping from Casillas!
Ten minutes later, Real’s corner, Valdes spilt Pepe’s header, but Sami Khedira was sharpest to pounce and slide it in from around two yards out.
A rarely ball from Khedira and Real Madrid took the lead 1-nil! Check it out again! Barca employed everything they have to breach Real defence. They finally got the chance in the 70th-minute. Lionel Messi’s fantastic run created the opportunity initially. Cristian Tello’s shot was saved. Then Adriano’s follow-up shot shot was deflected and superbly palmed away by Casillas, but Alexis Sanchez was there to turn it in.
Marvelous teamwork from Barcelona! But the home fans were silenced only three minutes later. Mezut Ozil’s superb pass released Ronaldo in space and he took the ball wide before smashing it home. 2-1, Real on the lead again! 2-1 was final and Real extended their lead to seven points with four games left.
