清·和邦額《夜譚隨錄》中有個成語叫做結舌瞪目。“結舌瞪目”中的“瞪目”就是瞪著眼睛；“結舌”則是不敢說話。瞪眼結舌說不出話來就是形容非常窘迫或驚呆的樣子。先秦·孟軻《孟子·盡心下》有個成語叫做茅塞頓開。“茅塞頓開”中的“茅”是指茅草；“塞”是指堵塞；“頓”意為頓時。“茅塞頓開”這個成語原意為心里好像有茅草堵著，現在忽然被打開了。形容閉塞的思路，由于得到了某種事物的啟發，豁然開朗，明白了事物的內在含義。唐·李商隱《為汝南公華州賀赦表》有個成語叫做沒齒難忘。“沒齒難忘”中的“齒”是指年齡；“沒齒”意為終身。沒齒難忘這個成語意思就是一輩子也忘不了，形容印象非常深刻。

那么，結舌瞪目，茅塞頓開和沒齒難忘這三個成語的意思在美語中用一個短語就可以表達出來。它是什么呢？我們就帶著這個問題進入到今天的地道美語的話聊室中來。

我們先來聽三個句子：

1. In a flash the evil intent of the vice-president usurping power hit the president right between the eyes.

2. Let us suppose that Mary hit John right between the eyes, what will he do? It's no doubt he wants to spend all his time with her and get to know about her better.

3. Mr. Monotone hit me right between the eyes with that shot,but I don't know about the other dozen people in the audience.

這三個句子中都有一個共同的短語是hit sb right between the eyes，毫無疑問我們的疑問就hit us right between the eyes（茅塞頓開了）。

下面我們來看一下剛才的三個句子:

1. In a flash the evil intent of the vice-president usurping power hit the president right between the eyes. 一剎那間，副總統篡權的罪惡意圖給總統當頭一棒。

In this sentence, "hit sb right between the eyes" means "to give sb a big suprise". 這句話中hit sb right between the eyes意思是讓某人非常吃驚。這也就是“結舌瞪目”的意思。
