2011年，諾貝爾物理學獎得主是：工作于勞倫斯.伯克萊國家實驗室的索羅•波爾馬特，澳大利亞國家實驗室的布萊恩•施密特和約翰斯•霍普金斯的亞當•里斯。瑞典皇家學院奧爾加.波特那講道：“在這個由物質主導的宇宙中，人們會認為引力將最終減慢膨脹的速度。然而，當諾貝爾獎得主們帶領的兩個團隊在1998年發現膨脹并未減緩，實際上是在加速的時候，這是多么的令人震驚。通過對比遙遠的超級新星和附近超級新星的亮度， 科學家們發現遙遠的超級新星相對而言比近的要暗淡25%左右。它們比實際的要遠。顯然宇宙是在膨脹。因此，這一發現可以說是宇宙天體學基本理論上的一個里程碑。同時，也是對下一代科學家的一個挑戰。”
