China's Li Na was on court at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday to begin her run. Li, taking on scrappy Romanian Simona Halep, trying to avoid becoming the second Grand Slam winner to bow out in round one after Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was sent home on Monday.

Since her Grand Slam breakthrough at the French Open, Li Na has been fairly inconsistent, bouncing out in the second round at the last Grand Slam, Wimbledon. So, the Chinese world number six, looking for a strong start to her run at Flushing Meadows.

Li's opponent Halep, 10 years her junior at 19 years of age ranked 53rd in the world. On paper, this one is a bit of a mismatch. Li, certainly expected to brush aside Halep. But as the first set developed, it became clear that Li was not in top form on Tuesday.

Li, struggling with her serve, her first serve percentage on the day, a dismal 61 percent. Li recorded five double faults on the day. She also, committed almost three times as many unforced errors as Halep.

All of this would lead to Halep, breaking Li twice in the first set and then, with a chance to seal the first set, the Romanian teenager would get it done. Halep won 6-2.

The second set would start along the same lines as the first, with Li down a break early. But the Chinese would break back to bring the set level at 4-4. Li, would then take a 5-4 lead to move one game away from tying it up.

The turning point though would come in the eleventh game of the second set. Li was broken by Halep to go 6-5 down. And Halep, would go on to serve out the set 7-5 to knock out Li in straight sets. So Li Na's run at the US Open, over very early as she is sent home in the first round.
