Several weeks after a young man had been hired, he was called into the personnel director's office.
“What is the meaning of this? “ the director asked, “When you applied for the job, you told us you had five years' experience. Now we discover this is the first job you ever held.”
“Well,” the young man said, “in your advertisement you said you wanted somebody with imagination.”

【詞匯講解】
1.hire雇用。文中hire是及物動詞的用法。如果是不及物動詞，就是“接受雇用“的意思，常與介詞 “out／on”連用：He hired out as a farmhand.他當了農場雇工。
2.personnel主管人事的：sb.’s personnel file某人的人事檔案； a personnel man人事部職員
3.director經理，主管。在不同的語境下有不同的職位的意思，如“局長”、“處長”、“校長”、“導演”、“指揮”、“神父”等。
4.apply for a job申請就業。Apply是個很實用的詞，作及物動詞時，apply⋯to 是致力于⋯ 的意思：He applied himself to learning French.他致力于學習法語。作不及物動詞時，apply to有“適用”的意思：This rule applies to freshmen only.此項規定僅適用于大一新生。
5.discover發現，及物或不及物皆可，作及物動詞時：She discovered she had lost her purse. 她發現自己丟了錢包。作不及物動詞時：The rumour is false, as far as I can discover.就我所知，傳聞不確。
