Chinese Climate Envoy: China Looks Forward to A Positive Result from the Copenhagen Climate conference
China looks forward to a positive result from the Copenhagen climate conference. The country's top climate negotiator, Xie Zhen-hua, delivered the message at a press conference after the first day's meeting with his counterparts from more than 190 countries. Our reporter Wang Ling has more.
The vice minister of China's National Development and Reform Commission pronounced China's stance on the two-week meetings, which shall promote a new round of talks on the issue of climate change.
"We expect the Copenhagen climate conference, as a starting point, to summon global efforts to combat climate change in line with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. We look forward to reaching a legally binding deal with concrete actions as outlined in the Bali Road Map, which is the goal of the developing world."
Xie Zhenhua said it is unacceptable to developing countries to call off the Kyoto Protocol as proposed by some developed countries.
"Developing countries are steadfast in calling the conference to be consistent with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Bali Road Map. Some developed countries have suggested to produce a new treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol. It will undoubtedly hurt the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities; and is unacceptable for all developing countries."
Xie Zhenhua urged the developed countries to honor their commitments on emission reduction and at the same time to offer financial and technological support to developing nations to help them adapt to and slow down climate change under the sustainable development framework.
