1. Speaking Englishfluently and accuratelyisa goal ofmany people studying English in China. Fluency can be simply defined as"being able to communicateideaswithouthaving to stop and think too much aboutwhatone is saying"; speaking accurately means "speakingwithouterrors of grammar and vocabulary".
2. The problem isthatmany students findthatif they try to speak fast, theymakemore mistakes. And, if theyslowdown, theremay be fewererrorsbut it can sound unnatural. So,howdo balance accuracy and fluencyin spoken English?
3. It candependonthe manner inwhich one hasstudied English in the past. Peoplewhotend tofocus on accuracy may findthat they worry too much about making mistakes. This can make them nervous orembarrassed about speaking Englishinpublic. As a result, theirspoken English might not improve. This means that, although they know Englishgrammar and vocabulary well, they might not be able to hold a goodconversation.
4. On the other hand, there are thosewho really like to talkand are willing to try their language out even if they make mistakes.Thiswillingness to takerisks helps them speak more fluidly. But, if they make a lot of mistakes, they may find it difficult toget their ideas across.
+ to do sth.)。
5. The debate aboutwhichis more important-fluency oraccuracy-in the English languagehas lasted for a long time. Still, onething is clear:speaking a languagewellneeds both fluency and accuracy. How can we be sure that we candevelop both? The following tips could help.
6. Find the problem. Whatkind of personare you-onewhofocuses on accuracyor onewhofocuses onfrequency? The first step istorecognize your problemand go to work on it. Think about situationswhereyou've usedEnglishandhowyou felt about making mistakes? Do you always try some newlanguageeven thoughit might not be correct? Or do you feelembarrassed by mistakes?
第一步是認(rèn)識(shí)到你的問(wèn)題,然后著手解決問(wèn)題(go to work on it)。
7. Focus on one problemata time. When you speak English, find the mistakesyou make most often. One mistakeChinese often makeis omitting the "s" from the third person singular verb.Or you may speak too slowlyas ifyouwere searching fortheright word and correct grammar. The next time you use English, try towork onthose problemsyou have identified. If it'sfluency, try to focus on it. If you have a problemwiththe third personsingular, try toconcentrate on whenyou makesucherrors. Don'tspendtimethinkingabout other mistakes.Bychoosing an area to work on, you can isolate problems andhelpyourself overcome them.
你下一次使用英語(yǔ)時(shí),力求改正那些你已經(jīng)認(rèn)識(shí)到的(you have identified)問(wèn)題。 如果你的問(wèn)題是在第三人稱單數(shù),那就盡力專注于你犯此類錯(cuò)誤的時(shí)候(when you make such errors)。
8. Vary your practice. If you go to an English corner or an English club, tryto change the types of activitiesyoutake part inso thatyou practice both fluency and accuracy. Public speakingallows you to slow downandbe sureyou have time toconcentrate onthe language. Meanwhile, discussions are good practiceforfluency, especially if you don't stopeachtimea mistake is made.
9. Learn the differencebetween fluency and speed. Some Chinese thinkthatspeaking fastis the same as speaking fluently. In fact, speaking fluently involves not onlyspeed. Italso involves stress, pronunciation and intonation. If you make a mistakein these, speaking fast will only make itworse. Don't sacrifice understanding for speed.
(sacrifice for 為…
10. Try recording yourself.Takea tape recorderand record a conversation with a friend oraspeech ormonologue asyou do it naturally! A two-or-three-minute recording is enough. When you've finished, listen to yourself. Can you identify and correctany errors?Make ita regularpractice. The moreyou record yourself, the moreconfident andnaturalsoundingyouwill become.
