LESSON 50 The prince and the judge
第五十課 王子和法官
Henry V. was as brave a King as ever sat on the English throne, and gained one of the greatest victories ever won by English soldiers.
亨利五世是一位勇敢的英國國王，在位期間帶領(lǐng)著英國士兵獲得了最大的勝利。
But when he was Prince of Wales, he was a very wild and riotous youth. He mixed with low companions, who led him to do many base and foolish acts, quite unworthy of a Prince.
在他還是威爾士王子時，是一個狂野不羈的年輕人。他整天和身份卑微的朋友一起玩兒，這些人帶著他做過很多卑鄙愚蠢的事情，非常不符合王子的身份。
On one occasion one of his friends was tried for some offence before the Lord Chief Justice. He was found guilty, and was ordered to be sent to prison.
有一次他的一個朋友因為犯罪被審判長審判，被發(fā)現(xiàn)有罪，要被送進監(jiān)獄。
When the Prince, who was in the court, heard the sentence, he fell into a great rage. He spoke very rudely to the Judge, and commanded him to let his friend off.
王子當(dāng)時也在法庭里，聽到這個宣判后很惱怒，很粗暴命令法官放了他的朋友。
"Prison," he said, "is no place for a Prince's friend. I am Prince of Wales, and I forbid you to send this man to prison, like a common thief."
他說，監(jiān)獄不是王子的朋友應(yīng)該呆的地方，我是王子，我不允許你像對一般的賊一樣送他進監(jiān)獄。
"Prince or no Prince," replied the Judge, "you have no right to speak thus to the King's Judge. I have sworn to do justice; and justice I shall do."
法官回答道，無論你是不是王子，你都無權(quán)這樣對國王的法官說話。我發(fā)過誓要公正，我必須做到公正。
The Prince, getting more enraged, then tried to set the prisoner free himself. But the Judge told him it was none of his business, and ordered him to cease from such riot in court.
王子變得更惱火了，然后試圖自己把犯人放了，這個法官告訴他不關(guān)他的事，讓他不要擾亂法庭秩序。
The calmness with which the Judge spoke made the Prince still more angry; and he rushed up to the bench, and struck the Judge a severe blow on the face!
法官說話時的平靜語氣讓王子更生氣了，然后沖到了法官席上在法官臉上打了一拳。
For this, the Judge ordered the officers of the court to seize the Prince, and take him to prison with his friend. "I do this," he said, "not because he has done me harm, but because he has insulted the honor of the law."
因為這一舉動，法官命令法庭官員逮捕王子，把王子和王子的朋友一起送到監(jiān)獄里面，法官說道，“我這么做，并不是因為他傷害了我，而是因為他侮辱了法律。”
