一.certain：adj.確定的, 肯定的, 某事, 某人, 某種, （與人名連用,表示不認識此人）一位叫..., 特定的, 輕微的, 微小的pron.某些, 某幾個
【語法用法】
certain表示“某個，某些”時，作形容詞或代詞，如a certain friend of his或certain of his；
certain作形容詞表示“一些”時，常修飾抽象名詞，如a certain hesitation，a certain coldness；
區別certain和sure：
兩者后面都可跟of，不定式或that從句。
certain比sure語氣來的更重。
It is certain that...比It is sure that...更為普遍。
I am certain/sure of his honesty.
I am certain/sure to see him tomorrow.
certian of和certain to do表示不同的意思。
He is certain to come tomorrow.
他明天一定來。
He is certain of coming tomorrow.
他相信他明天一定來。
certain作形容詞指“確定的”時，后面接的介詞about可省略。
I am not certain (about) where he lives.
我不太確定他住在哪里。
for certain表示“肯定的，無疑的”，屬于固定詞組。
【錯句舉例與錯句分析】
錯句: I can say with certain when she will leave for Hongkong.
訂正: I can say for certain when she will leave for Hongkong.
翻譯: 我能確定地說她哪時候出發去香港。
分析: for certain是固定詞組，指“肯定地”。
【詞義辨析】
sure, certain, definite, positive
這些形容詞均含“無疑的，確信的”之意。
sure側重主觀上對某事確信無疑。
certain與sure同義，但語氣比sure強，著重指有確切理由或不容置疑的證據所支持的確信。
definite指已毫無懷疑的余地。
positive語氣強烈，指對自己的看法或作的結論的正確性有不可動搖的信念。
【例句用法】
For certain reasons I will be unable to attend the meeting.
因為某種原因，我不能出席這次會議。
I can't say for certain when he will arrive.
我說不準他什么時候會來。
It's certain that every effect must have a cause.
無疑，每個結果必定有其原因。
二.need：v.需要, 必需 n.需要, 必要, 缺乏
【詞義辨析】
lack, need, want, require
這些動詞均有“缺少、短少”之意。
lack指完全短缺或數量不足。
need語氣較重，指需要必不可少的東西，強調急需。
want側重缺少某種必需之物，或個人渴望得到的東西。
require使用廣泛，語氣較輕。強調急需時可與need換用，但有時暗示所需的人或物是完成某一任務必不可少的。
need(普通動詞), need(情態動詞)
need的意義是“需要”、“必須”，既可用作普通動詞，又可用作情態動詞。
need(普通動詞)有各種時態形式的變化；第三人稱單數現在時要加-s；與帶to的不定式連用。
The pen needs mending.
這支鋼筆需要修理。
Does she need to go to the club?
她必須去俱樂部嗎？
She does not need to go there at present.
現在她不必去那里。
need(情態動詞)沒有過去形式；第三人稱單數現在時不加-s；不用在肯定句里，只用于疑問句和否定句；與不帶to的不定式連用。
Need she go now?
她必須現在去嗎？
She need not come to school at present.
她現在不必來學校。
Mary need not have done it.
瑪麗本來不必去做那件事。（言外之意是：她已經做了）
【例句用法】
I feel a need to talk to you about it.
我覺得有必要跟你談談那件事。
We are collecting money for children in need.
我們在為貧困兒童募捐。
You needn't talk so loud.
你說話的聲音用不著那么大。
The doctor told me I was in need of a good rest.
醫生對我說，我需要好好休息。
