Chord Overstreet, who joined Glee last season as recurring guest star and transfer student Sam Evans, will not be a series regular for season three, a rep for Fox confirms to PEOPLE

"Well its been a good yr too bad its over," the actor, 22, Tweeted Friday, seemingly alluding to his diminished role on the show. "Time for summer and starting fresh."

The rep did not disclose the reason for the decision, but Overstreet might make his way back to the Glee gang as an occasional guest star, a source close to the show tells TV Line, which first reported the news.

The casting news comes on the heels of a recent promise from creator Ryan Murphy that some of the show's main characters would graduate by the end of season three.
