彌留之際亂世真情

又是一對戰火硝煙中的苦命鴛鴦。Katharine身受重傷，她在山洞里等待徒步走出沙漠求救的情人Sharif歸來，帶給她生的希望。借著手電筒的最后一點光亮，被寒冷、饑餓、傷痛折磨的Katharine寫下這幾行訣別的文字：國家本沒有邊界，我想要的，只是與你漫步在沒有地圖界限的土地上，攜手于風中……

Katharine: My darling, I am waiting for you. How long is a day in the dark? Or a week? The fire is gone now, and I'm horribly cold. I really ought to drag myself outside, and there would be the sun. I am afraid I waste the light on the paintings, and on writing these words.

We die, we die rich with lovers, and tribes, tastes we have swallowed, bodies we have entered and swum up like rivers, fears we've hidden in, like the wretched cave. I want all this marked on my body. We are the real countries, not the boundaries drawn on maps with names of powerful men.

I know you will come and carry me out in the palace of winds. That's all I've wanted, to walk in such a place with you, with friends, an earth without maps.

The lamp is gone out, and I'm writing in the darkness.

【重點講解】

當Sharif不惜以地圖向敵軍交換汽油、架著飛機趕回沙漠，看到的只是Katharine彌留之際惜別的文字。出賣的情報、對國家的背叛以及因此而受到傷害的朋友，都沒能阻擋住戀人的玉損香消。

wait for是比較常用的固定搭配，表示等候、等待。gone是過去分詞變化成的形容詞作表語，意思是熄滅的、逝去的。因為Sharif離去前點燃的篝火已經熄滅，手電筒又支撐不了多久，山洞里漆黑陰冷、不分晝夜，Katharine才說，不知道已經過去了一天還是一個星期，她渴望見到陽光。drag原意就是拖、緩慢而費力地行動。

Katharine說，我們死去，與不同種族的人（tribes）一起，帶著對愛人（lover）的記憶，帶著經歷過的人生百味（taste）酸甜苦辣的回味，帶著我們心底曾經的恐懼膽怯（fear），以及靈魂棲身其中的這副皮囊（body），所以即使是死亡，也是充實而豐富的（rich）。這里使用了兩個生動的動詞：swallow，吞下，與“味道”的比喻相得益彰；enter，進入，強調了靈魂的獨立，并不是與身體合二為一的。hide in，隱藏在深處。

正常生活被戰爭顛覆，陽光、清風、與心愛的人相知相守，這些和平年月唾手可得的東西在動蕩的歲月中顯得遙不可及。Katharine告訴愛人她最后的領悟：國家不是用畫在地圖上的邊界（boundaries drawn on maps）圍成的，不是以女王或首相的意志鑄就的，我們——實實在在的人，才是國家的真正組成。
