英國東鄰北海，西、北面對大西洋，南面是英吉利海峽（the English Channel），與法國隔海相望。
地理上，這里被稱為“不列顛群島”（British Isles），由大不列顛島（Great Britain）和愛爾蘭島（Ireland）這兩大島嶼，以及其它幾百個小島組成。
大不列顛島上分布著英格蘭、蘇格蘭和威爾士（England,Scotland and Wales）三個區域，而愛爾蘭島則分成北愛爾蘭和愛爾蘭共和國（Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland）兩塊。
政治上，大不列顛和北愛爾蘭共同組成聯合王國（the United Kingdom），而愛爾蘭共和國則是獨立于聯合王國而存在的獨立的國家。我們通常所說的英國，則是指聯合王國。
