A top Chinese banker has a message for Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma: You aren't going to destroy us.

China Minsheng Bank Corp. Chairman Dong Wenbiao defended the Chinese banking system to an audience of business executives and economists on Tuesday at the annual Bo'ao Forum in southern China. At first blush, that may seem like a difficult task, as the country's biggest banks have long been criticized insufficient lending to some corners and for piling on fees.

But the banks do a lot more than people realize, Mr. Dong argued. He chalked up negativity toward the traditional banking sector as a result of negative media coverage and criticism from some high-profile figures like Mr. Ma, Alibaba's founder and chairman.

Mr. Ma has been outspoken about what he says is a need to reform China's banking system. In a interview with the People's Daily in June , Mr. Ma said 'China's financial industry, especially the banking industry, only serves 20% of clients, and I see there are 80% of the clients are not covered.'

Mr. Dong on Tuesday said he has spoken to Mr. Ma -- and given him a bit of a hard time about his stance. 'I said to Jack Ma, 'Brother, let's develop together. Give up your reform efforts. You don't have the ability.''
董文標周二表示，他已經向馬云放出狠話：“我跟馬云說，兄弟，咱們共同發展，你也不要都革命了，你也沒那本事。”
Last year Alipay, Alibaba's online payment affiliate, launched Yu'E Bao, or 'leftover treasure,' a product similar to a money-market fund, last summer. As of mid-January, it had more than 49 million customers with more than $40 billion in investments, according to Alipay. Competitors have proliferated, promising higher and quicker returns than bank deposits.

Mr. Dong didn't seem impressed.

'For sure, there's a bit of an impact,' he said. 'But it's not a large one, because we do the real stuff and at the same time we also do the Internet stuff.'
他說：“有影響肯定會有一點，但是影響不大。因為我們做實的，同時我們也做網上的東西”。
'Don't worry that [the banks] will become dinosaurs,' he added.
他補充說：“不要擔心我們成了末代恐龍或者什么家伙。”
The banker's seemly blunt statement doesn't mean a lack of handshaking between the two. Minsheng, the country's 10th largest bank and the biggest that isn't state controlled, said last September that it teamed up with Alibaba to provide financial services. The bank said cooperation with Alibaba will cover the wealth management business, credit card operations, electronic banking and information technology.
董文標這番表面上直來直去的言辭并不意味著兩者之間不打交道。民生銀行是中國第十大銀行，也是最大的非國有控股銀行。該行去年9月份宣布與阿里巴巴合伙提供金融服務。該行說，與阿里巴巴的合作將涵蓋理財業務、信用卡業務、電子銀行和信息技術等。
In an interview with the Journal last year, before the partnership was announced, Mr. Dong said he told Mr. Ma that they should team up because the e-commerce pioneer would find it hard to break into the banking sector without a partner. He didn't say what Mr. Ma said in response.
去年宣布合伙事宜前，董文標曾接受本報記者的采訪，他說，他告訴馬云他們應該合作，因為阿里巴巴雖然是電子商務領域的先鋒，但如果沒有一個合作者，就很難打入銀行領域。他沒有說馬云當時是怎么回應的。
