Django looks as if he may shuffle free of his fetters in China once again. The question is, how many Chinese moviegoers will pay to see him?

After being unexpectedly pulled from theaters moments after its Chinese release earlier this month, Quentin Tarantino＊s controversial ※Django Unchained§ could return to theaters as early as May 7, according to local media reports (in Chinese here, here and here).
據中國媒體報道，4月早些時候上映首日即被意外叫停之后，塔倫蒂諾(Quentin Tarantino)執導的備受爭議的電影《被解救的姜戈》(Django Unchained)最早可能于5月7日上映。
※We got notice from relevant departments about releasing the film ,§ a Beijing-based employee of the Megabox theater chain told China Real Time on Friday, confirming the May 7th rerelease date. Megabox would soon put announcement about the film＊s return to screen on their official website, the employee said.

Not all theaters appear to have gotten the notice. Employees of three different theaters in Shanghai 岸 UME International Complex, Kodak Cinema and Nextage Film in Pudong 岸 said that they have not been informed of any screenings since the movie was pulled from their cinemas earlier this month. An employee of the UME Cineplex theater chain in Beijing also said that they hadn＊t heard of the film＊s impending return.

The blood-drenched story of an American slave-turned-bounty hunter trying to free his wife, ※Django§ was set to be the first film by Mr. Tarantino to enjoy theatrical release in China on April 11 when authorities suddenly told movie chains to pull the film for ※technical reasons.§ Speculation spread rapidly online that concerns over nudity might have been the culprit. China Film Group, the country＊s main state-run film distributor, did not elaborate on the decision to shut screenings down.

A spokesman for China Film Group told China Real Time on Friday that he had not been informed of any decision on the fate of the film. Calls to the company＊s office rang unanswered. This film is not listed on the May release schedule posted on the China Film Group website.

Even if ※Django§ does stride back into theaters in early May, the damage may have already been done. Commenting on the news on popular Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Weibo, a number of social media users said they were reluctant to go to the cinema to see the film after waiting so long. ※The high definition version is already available online. Why would someone bother to go to the cinema after watching that?§ said one Weibo user. ※I have watched the uncut version already. Why bother to going to theater?§ said another.

Some are worried that the film＊s box office will also be hurt by its collision with other Hollywood blockbusters scheduled for release in China next month, including Tom Cruise sci-fi romp ※Oblivion§ and the highly hyped ※Iron man 3.§ The latter is set to be released on May 3rd China, according to a message posted on the verified Sina Weibo account of headliner Robert Downey Jr.
