For the past two months, Wang Haimao and his coworkers have been working at the same job every day. They check dozens of iron wires to determine if they're in perfect condition. The job is simple and repetitive, but very important to the performers since they will be lifted by wires up to 80 meters above the ground to do various acrobatic moves.
"I'm responsible for the wires. If I find a fracture on the wire, I will report it and ask people to change or fix the broken part. We came here on Sept. 2nd and required to do a thorough check every time after the aerial performers' practice."
At the Asiad opening ceremony, a total of 180 performers will participate in the aerial show. They are students from the Ta Gou Martial Art School in Henan Province. These teenage performers trained for a year at a special school. Since their arrival in Guangzhou three months ago, their intense training never stopped.
"We get up around 5 or 6 in the morning and then do the morning session of rehearsal. The afternoon training starts at 3 and lasts for about 3 hours. In the evening, we also take our required school course-work."
The opening ceremony, on Friday night will not only feast people's eyes with art performances but also with a fountain show as the stage backdrop. The computer-controlled fountain will transform into various kinds of patterns, serving different ambiences and chapters.
Bai Qiang is the chief technician of the fountain performance. He says the fountain show is facilitated by a delicate computer-assisted design and every detail remains in reliable hands.
"The fountain show is for the Asian Games. It's such a grand event that we need to pay close attention to the technical part and the project should be carefully designed and executed. We already came up with a back-up computer system that will guarantee no operation glitch would occur during the show."
The opening ceremony will begin at 8 P.M., Beijing-time, on November 12 and last for nearly two hours. Fireworks and a cruising parade will make for a big part of the ceremony.
