A recent case I heard was of a man accused and found guilty of breaking into a house and stealing some money.
最近有個(gè)案子是有個(gè)男人因?yàn)榉欠ㄈ肭趾屯当I金錢(qián)而被起訴并被判處有罪。
Well, was he really guilty, judge?
那么，他的確有罪嗎，法官？
He admitted that he'd done it, and there were several witnesses saying that he had indeed done it.
他承認(rèn)他做了，周?chē)灿心繐糇C人證實(shí)他的確做了。
So I can only assume that he was guilty.
所以我只能推斷他有罪。
Why did he do it?
他為什么要這么做呢？
Well, the reasons were a little muddied.
唔，原因有點(diǎn)復(fù)雜。
Probably at least it seemed in a trial that he did it to get some money to feed his family.
簡(jiǎn)單來(lái)說(shuō)，從審判看來(lái)他是為了弄點(diǎn)錢(qián)來(lái)養(yǎng)活他的家庭。
You see, he'd been out of work for some time.
你看，他已經(jīng)有段時(shí)間沒(méi)有工作了。
Well, he'd been out of work and he chose to break into a house to get money for his family
他有一段時(shí)間沒(méi)有工作，就選擇非法闖入來(lái)掙錢(qián)養(yǎng)活家庭，
and apparently in front of people that, err... could see him do it.
尤其是在能看見(jiàn)他做什么的人們面前這樣做。
His attorney presented testimony that he had indeed applied for jobs and was listed with several employment agencies,
他的律師證詞里說(shuō)他的確在好幾所就業(yè)中介請(qǐng)了工作，
including the state employment agency, but there weren't any jobs.
包括國(guó)家職業(yè)介紹所，但沒(méi)有工作崗位。
And he had no luck!
他真不幸。
He had no luck and it'd been some time.
他的確不走運(yùn)，不走運(yùn)有一段時(shí)間了。
He had two children and both of them were needing food and clothing.
他有兩個(gè)孩子，兩個(gè)孩子都需要吃的和穿的。
So he was in desperate circumstances. Did you sentence him?
所以他在絕望的處境之中。你給他判刑了嗎？
Yes.
是的。
But what good does it do to put the man into jail when he's obviously in such need?
如果一個(gè)人很明顯處于需要幫助的時(shí)候，為什么要把他扔進(jìn)監(jiān)獄呢？
This particular fellow has been in prison before.
這個(gè)人原來(lái)就去過(guò)監(jiān)獄。
For the same thing?

No, for a different sort of crime.

Huh?
哈？
But he did know about crime, so I suppose there are folks that just have to go back to prison several times.
