Three hours passed. Then the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. No one spoke. As papers in hand, the professor faced the class. He surveyed the worried faces before him, then asked, "How many completed all five questions?"
三個小時的考試時間過去了，教授開始收試卷。學生們臉上的自信這時已經蕩然無存了，顯出手足無措的樣子。沒有人說話。教授手持試卷，低頭掃視著整個班。他審視著面前一張張惶恐的臉，問：“有多少人完成了這五道題？”
Not a hand was raised.
沒有人舉手。
"How many answered four?"
“那么四道題呢？”
Still no hands.
仍然沒人舉手。
"Three? Two?"
“三道……兩道呢？”
The students shifted restlessly in their seats.
學生們這時在座位上發出了一陣不安的騷動。
"One, then? Certainly somebody has finished one."
“那么一道呢？肯定有人能完成一道吧?！?/div>
But the class remained silent. The professor put down the papers. "That is exactly what I expected," he said. "I just want to impress upon you that, even though you have completed four years of engineering. There are still many things about the subject you don't know. These questions you could not answer are relatively common in everyday practice." Then, smiling, he added, "You will all pass this course, but remember — even though you are now college graduates, your education has just begun."
回答教授的仍然是沉默。“不出我所料，”教授放下試卷說，“我只是想讓你們謹記，雖然你們已經完成了四年的工程學課程，但在這個科目中仍有很多東西是你們所不懂的。其實這些問題在你們的日常實踐中相當常見。”他又微笑著補充一句：“這次考試你們將全部通過，但請大家記住：大學畢業僅僅表示你們的教育才剛開始?！?/div>
The years have obscured the name of this professor, but not the lesson he taught.
歲月流逝，教授的名字已經被淡忘，但是他的教導卻為學生所銘刻于心。
