Thailand PM Yingluck Shinawatra Dismissed
A court rules that the transfer of a senior civil servant was part of a "hidden agenda" to benefit the leader's powerful family.
This was the reaction to the news.
As a judge read out his televised verdict, Thai protesters were overjoyed to learn that their prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra had been ordered to stand down.
She'd been found guilty of abusing her status when she transferred a senior civil servant to another position. The move was said to benefit her politically-powerful family and therefore violated Thailand's constitution.
I'm happy that she's out, but I was hoping the whole government would be out of power.
We are happy for our country, the judge verdict, especially for her to stop working, she get off from ruling our country.
The ruling was a victory for Yingluck's opponents, mostly from the urban elite, who for the past six months have staged protests demanding the prime minister's resignation.
Thailand's first female prime minister has been in power for over two years, but faced considerable opposition. Her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted as prime minister in a military coup in 2006. He now lives overseas to avoid prison for corruption.
The family are despised by the middle classes who accused them of corruption and abuse of power. Yingluck held a news conference where she denied any wrongdoing.
I insist that we have used honesty to adminster the country and we have done anything that conveys any dishonored action as accused.
There are fears that the coup will &8 protest by supporters of the government which remains very popular in rural areas. Elections are planned for July.
