Syria's Warring Sides Agree To Direct Talks
The Syrian delegations agree to negotiations - but the deep rifts between them were on display on day one of peace talks.
Syria's government delegation arrived in when straight onto the attack.
“Mr. deputy prime minister, I'm sorry to..can you just wrap up, because you've spoken over 20 minutes.” “You live in the New York, I live in Syria, I have the right to give the Syrian vision here in this forum” The foreign minister had been goaded by this from the US Secretary of State John Kerry. “Bashar al-Assad will not be part of their transitional government, there's no way, no way possible in the imagination that the man who has led the brutal response to his own people could regain the legitimacy to govern.”Mr. Moallem replied, “No one, Mr. Kerry in the world has the right to give legitimacy or to withdraw legitimacy from our president, our constitution, our government or our law or anything in Syria but Syrians”
One issue has come to the surface and that is not gonna go away. This is now personal, Syria is all about whether or not Bashar al-Assad will go. And Britain's foreign secretary agreed. “This is not a regime, and this is not a national leader Assad who can ever be a leader of their country again, who can unit their people again. And so there has to be a transition at some point, there's ever to be peace in Syria.” Sensing the opportunity to drive away which between Assad and his government, the leader of the Syrian opposition in Montreux tried to get the government delegation to switch sides.
“I call on the delegation to sign the Geneva communique before you, so that all the competencies of Assad will be transferred, including the executive, the military and the investigative powers. And this will be the first building block of the new Syria. My question is very clear, do we have such a partner.” The UN Secretary General ended the first aired, the conference with a plea. “Enough is enough, the time has to come to negotiate, Syrians must come together to save their country.” Negotiation started in earnest in Geneva on Friday, and there's still no guarantee that the warring factions will actually sit around the same table.
