Jackie Robinson
Carl K Furthermore back in 1940, African Americans were not allowed to play in the Major Leagues simply because of the color of their skin. However, in late 1940, a courageous young African American man by the name of Jackie Robinson decided that his love for the game would overpower the hatred and racism of the time. An unbelievably athletic shortstop with a sharp knack for the game, Robinson, despite his race, could not be turned down by Los Angeles Dodgers GM Robert Johns. Although Jackie Robinson had become the first African American to make it to the Major Leagues, his troubles had just begun. For Jackie Robinson, the days that followed consisted of constant ridicule filled with racial slurs. Furthermore, Jackie's mailbox would be filled day after day with death threats to both him and his family. Yet Robinson swallowed his pride and chose to silence his critics by posting up MVP callibur numbers within his first year in the majors, which led to his winning of the National League Rookie of the Year Award. In the proceeding years, because of Robinson's trailblazing for the rest of the African American community, baseball's African American population grew exponentially. J Robinson used his creativity to challenge authority by sacrificing his personal pride and health in order to cause change in something he believed in.
