劇情:《環太平洋》是發生在兩個世界（平行宇宙）中的故事：其中一個另類宇宙是近未來的地球，在這個世界里，2012年11月發生了一件重大事件——第一只kaiju（類似哥斯拉的巨型怪獸）由太平洋海底的一個洞穴中出現，接著攻擊了人類城市。自遭到巨型怪獸的攻擊后，此后數十年間，不斷有怪獸從海底的未知世界冒出，攻擊洛杉磯等太平洋沿岸城市。怪獸的數量和種類越來越多，攻擊次數也越來越頻繁，破壞程度越來越嚴重，人類世界始終籠罩在死亡與恐懼的陰影下。

為了抵御海洋怪獸們越來越頻繁、破壞性越來越大的攻擊，人類啟動了一項名為“賊鷗”（Jaeger）的軍事計劃，組建了一支配備有最頂尖科技裝備的軍隊對來犯的怪獸進行有效還擊。組成“賊鷗”軍隊的個體是武裝到牙齒的巨型“機甲戰士”，每個“機甲戰士”由兩名人類技師操控，裝備有厚重的鐵甲與最先進的攻擊武器。

The first Kaiju made land in San Francisco. The second attack hit Minoa. And the 3rd one hit Kabul. And then we learn this was not gonna stop. In order to fight monsters, we created monsters of our own who needed a new weapon. The Jaeger program was born. Two pilots are minds on memories, connect a man and machine become one.

Today at the edge of our hope, the end of our time, we’ve chose to believe in each other, today we face the monsters at our door, today we are cancelling the apocalypse.
