stand for: 1. hold (an opinion); mean or believe (something such as a principle)

This decision goes against everything I stand for.

這一決定與我所主張的每一件事都格格不入。

2. accept or bear (something bad); bear with

I won't stand for any more of her bad manners; I shall ask her to leave my house.

我再也不能忍受她的粗魯舉止了，我要請她離開我的房子。

Why do you stand for such bad working conditions?

3. represent

The letters PRC stand for the People's Republic of China.

PRC這三個字母代表中華人民共和國。

conviction: n. very strong opinion or belief (This word was learned in Unit 4 B.)

She will not go against her convictions.
