指示代名詞是指明一定的人或事物的代名詞，以this, that, these, those, such為主；另外， such, so, same 也常用作指示代名詞。
1. 指示代名詞后不能接名詞，如果接名詞，即為指示形容詞。
This is my stamp album.
這是我的郵冊。
This是指示代名詞。
This stamp album is mine.
這本郵冊是我的。
This是指示形容詞。
l 2. 指示代名詞可用來代替前面的名詞或句子。
I have two sets; you can take this away.
我有兩套,你可以拿走這套。
this代替set。
3. this, these一般用來指時間或空間上較近的人或事物；that, those指在時間和空間上較遠(yuǎn)的人或事物。
This was bought in Japan.
這是在日本買的。
4. that和those常用來指上文已講到的事物；this和these指下文將要講到的事物。
I like the mountains. That is why I bought it.
我喜歡這山脈。那就是我買它的原因。
5. that, those可以代替前面已提到過的名詞，以避免重復(fù)。
Its design is not the same as that of others.
它們的設(shè)計與眾不同。
指代不可數(shù)名詞只可用that。指代復(fù)數(shù)可數(shù)名詞則可用those或the ones。
6. 指示代名詞一般都可以用作主語、賓語和主語補語等句子成分。
That is another album of mine.
那是我的另一本郵冊。
that作主語。
