When you need to ask where the toilet is, what do you say? Toilet? Bathroom? Washroom? Restroom? What’s the difference? There’s also lavatory. Have you heard of that one?
當你需要問廁所在哪時你會怎么說？ Toilet? Bathroom? Washroom? Restroom?都有什么區別？還有lavatory，你聽說過嗎？
Americans are used to saying bathroom because they feel the word “toilet” makes people think of an actual toilet(馬桶). British care less about this and have no problems with saying toilet. In fact, if you said bathroom in England it would actually mean a room with a bath!
美國人習慣說bathroom因為他們覺得“toilet”會讓人感覺是真馬桶。而英國人比較少關心這些，說toilet并沒有什么大問題。事實上，當你在英國說bathroom時可能意味著浴室。
Canadians also feel uncomfortable about the word “toilet”, so they use “washroom” instead. Funny fact: many signs in Canada contain both English and French, and the French word is “toilet”. So they have to see the word even though they don’t like it.
加拿大人對“Toilet”也感到不舒服，所以他們會用washroom。但一個有趣的現象是：許多加拿大的標志是英語和法語，而法語的詞是toilet，所以盡管他們不喜歡這個詞但也得經常看見它。
Restroom is often used for signs, but it’s not common in spoken English.
Restroom 經常用作標志，但在口語中不常用。
