over the top，over就是在某個東西之上。 Top的意思是頂部， over the top就是超過頂部，那也就是太過份了。

下面我們來聽一個例句。
這是一位家長在抱怨他女兒學(xué)校里的老師對待學(xué)生的方式。
Of course, the students need to be disciplined, but what their teachers did was over the top. You cannot make thirteen year olds line up all afternoon in the hot sun. That's what they do to prisoners of war.

Over the top這個習(xí)慣用語最初同戰(zhàn)爭有關(guān)。據(jù)說在第一次世界大戰(zhàn)期間，人們用over the top來形容士兵們從藏身的戰(zhàn)壕里跳出來迎戰(zhàn)敵軍，不過這樣做往往會造成大量傷亡。

有的人認為從安全的戰(zhàn)壕里跳出來襲擊敵人是過于勇敢。 因此over the top含有過份的意思。 我們的第二個例句比較輕松。 這是一個人在形容賭城拉斯維加斯一家非常豪華的旅館。
