這一課里我們再要講兩個和水，也就是和 water 這個字有關的詞匯。第一個是 to hold water。

To hold water 按字面解釋當然可以說是“不讓水漏出來”。但是，它的另外一個意思是指某一個人找的借口、提出的理由、或說的話是確實的，站得住腳的。美國人經常說："That excuse simply doesn't hold water."意思是：那個借口根本站不住腳。我們來舉個例子：

例句-1："The accused man claimed that he'd been in another city the night of the murder. But his story didn't hold water after three differnet witnesses testified in court that they had seen him running from the scene of the crime."
這句話的意思是：“這個被控告的人說，發(fā)生謀殺案的那天晚上他出門去了，不在當?shù)亍５牵腥齻€不同的證人都出庭作證說，他們看見他從作案的地點逃跑。因此，他說出事那天他不在當?shù)氐恼f法根本是靠不住的。”

今天要講的另外一個和water這個字有關的習慣用語是 water off a duck's back。

鴨子身上的毛就像雨衣一樣，水在上面呆不住，一下全滑掉了。因此，water off a duck's back 是指毫無作用。就像下面這句句子所說的：

例句-2："I keep telling my friend it's foolish to gamble all his pay, but it's like water off a duck's back."
這是說：“我一直告訴我的朋友，不要那么傻，把所有的工資都用在賭博上。可是，我的話對他全然不起作用。”

另外一個例子是：

例句-3："The doctors tell us it`s dangerous to smoke, but such good advice rolls off some people like water off a duck's back."
這是說：“醫(yī)生都告訴我們抽煙對身體是有害的。可是，這種勸告對于有些人來說就像耳邊風一樣，毫無作用。”

水對人的身體來說是非常重要的。可是,在英語里，這些和water有關的成語都含貶意好像有點奇怪。不過，至少有一個和water有關的習慣用語是讓人高興的。那就是：to make my mouth water 顧名思義，這個說法的意思是“讓我流口水”。

例句-4："The roast duck that restaurant serves is my favorate dish. Every time I think about it, it makes my mouth water."
這個人說：“我最喜歡吃那個飯館的烤鴨。每當我想起它我就會流口水。”

對于學英語的人來說,英語的基本詞匯和語法也許并不是最困難的。難的是許多英語字和詞匯有好幾種不同的意思。就拿blow這個字來說吧，它初看起來似乎很簡單，不就是“吹氣”的意思嗎？是的，但是這個字還有其他好些意思吶。它可以指用拳頭打某一樣東西，可以指爆炸，突然發(fā)生的災難，吹喇叭或其他樂器等等。在美國大學生經常用的一本字典里，blow這個字作為動詞和名詞加在一起總共有二十九種解釋。我們今天來看一看兩個和blow這個字有關的常用詞匯。

第一個是blow up。Blow up這個詞根據(jù)不同上下文可以作四種解釋。最普通的意思是：用炸藥炸毀什么東西。例如：

例句-1："The retreating German army tried to blow up all the bridges across the Rhine river to stop the Allied troops from crossing into Germany."
這句話的意思是：“正在撤退的德國軍隊設法炸毀萊茵河上所有的橋梁來阻擋聯(lián)軍越過萊茵河進入德國。”

另外blow up也可以指一個人發(fā)脾氣或發(fā)火。我們來舉一個例子：

例句-2："I really blew up when I learned my girl friend was going out with another man."
這是說：“當我知道我的女朋友還跟另外一個男朋友出去玩的時候，我可真火了。”

Blow up有的時候還可以解釋成給氣球吹氣，給排球和汽車輪胎打氣。比如一個人說：

例句-3："I have to stop at the gas station to blow up my front tires."
他說：“我得到加油站去給汽車的前輪打氣。”

最后，放大照片也可以用blow up這個詞。你可以到印照片的店里對售貨員說：

例句-4："I 'd like 8 by 10 blow ups of these negatives, please."
這是說：“請你把這些底片放大成8X10那么大的照片。”

今天要講的第二個和blow這個字有關的詞匯是blow out。

Blow out和blow up 一樣至少也有四個不同的意思。汽車輪胎炸了可以用blow out這個詞。比如有一個人說：

例句-5："My car smashed into a tree when I had a blow-out."
他說：“當我的輪胎炸了的時候，我的車就撞到一棵樹上去了。

Blow-out還可以解釋為把火滅掉。比如，一個母親對孩子說：

例句-6："You'd better blow out that candle before it sets fire to the tablecloth."
這位母親說：“你最好還是把那蠟燭滅了吧，否則臺布都要燒著了。”

在另外一種情況下，blow-out可以指電燈的保險絲斷了：

例句-7："All the lights went off in the building and the elevators stopped when the master fuse blew out."
他說：“大樓的總保險絲一斷，樓里所有的燈都滅了，電梯也停了。”

Blow out也可以指那種規(guī)模很大，排場很講究的聚會。下面這句話就是一個很好的例子：

例句-8："When the Lees celebrated their 25th anniversary, they invited all their friends to a big blow-out at the best hotel in town."
他說：“當李家夫婦慶祝他們結婚二十五周年的時候，他們在當?shù)刈罡呒壍穆灭^里舉行了一個規(guī)模盛大的聚會,把所有的朋友都請去了。”

今天我們講了兩個常用的詞匯，一個是blow up，另一個是blow out。Blow up 和blow out各自都有好幾個意思。剛學英語的人一開始也許會感到有點混亂。但是多接觸，多使用后也就會逐漸熟悉起來的。
